Getting started
What is Bridge Unlocked?
Bridge Unlocked is an online school for the card game bridge, made in Dublin. It teaches bridge from your very first trick to advanced play, in ACOL or Strong No‑Trump and 5-card majors: short lessons, real practice hands, full deals against the computer and a two-minute Daily Deal. It runs in your browser on phone, tablet or computer, and you can start for free.
Is this instead of a club or a class?
No. Bridge Unlocked sits beside your classes. Pick the topic you covered this week and practice it on as many hands as you like, in the system your club plays, until it becomes instinct. Not in a class? Find out what the game is all about, starting from the very first trick, one small step at a time, at your own pace, with no class needed.
Do I need to know anything about cards to start?
No. The first course starts with a shuffled pack: what the suits are worth, what a trick is, how the auction works. If you can hold thirteen cards, you can start.
Can I try it without an account?
Yes. Bridge Basics, the Bridge Basics Test, Your First Hand, Hand Evaluation and Opening 1NT are free to try with no account and no card details. Your progress is kept until you close the page. Save it with a free account whenever you like and it comes with you.
How do I sign in? I’m not good with passwords.
However suits you. We can email you a sign-in link: tap it and you’re in, nothing to remember, and you never need a password at all. If you’d rather use a password, set one and sign in with it instead. And if you ever forget a password, the email link still gets you in.
What do I need to run it?
Any up-to-date browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox) on a phone, tablet or computer. There’s nothing to install.
Is there an iPhone or Android app?
Not yet. Bridge Unlocked works fully in your browser today, on any device. Apps are on the way.
I used the early test version. Will my progress carry over?
Yes. Sign in with the same email on the device you used before, and your progress imports into your new account automatically. We’ll email you a confirmation when it’s saved.
I asked for a sign-in link but no email arrived.
Give it a minute or two, then check your spam or junk folder; sign-in emails from a new sender sometimes land there. Still nothing? Request a fresh link from the sign-in screen (and if you’ve set a password, you can simply sign in with that instead), or try a different email address. If it keeps happening, contact us and a person will sort it out.
Can my partner and I share one account?
Learning as a pair? Each of you needs your own free account: two records means two streaks and no arguments. Your level, bidding system and progress are one per account, so sharing one would muddle both your records. If setting up a second email address is the hurdle, contact us and we’ll happily walk you through it.
Can I use a password instead of email links?
Yes. Email link or password, your choice. Set a password when you join, or any time afterwards in Settings → Account → Sign-in and security, and sign in with it wherever you like. One thing to know: if you join with a password, the first emailed sign-in link you use confirms your address and clears that password, so set it again in your account and it stays. Prefer no password at all? You can always sign in with an email link instead. And if you ever forget your password, the email link signs you in anyway, so you’re never locked out.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes. Bridge Unlocked is for adults, so you need to be 18 or over to create an account. We never ask for your date of birth: the line on the sign-up screen says that by continuing you confirm you are 18 or over.
The teaching
Who writes the lessons?
People who know and love the game write every lesson, in plain language, with the judgement that only comes from sitting at the table. Then the computer checks the work.
How are the hands checked?
Every deal is played out by a solver that sees all four hands, and every auction is checked against the bidding rules taught in the course. Legal auctions, correct counts, sound leads. Both systems are checked separately, never just translated.
I played years ago and I’m rusty. Where do I start?
Tell us that when you join and we’ll suggest the Improver course, with two honest alternatives: a quick run through the Beginner course, or search for exactly the topic that’s rusted. Nothing is forced; the whole curriculum stays browsable.
How long does it take to learn bridge?
The Beginner course takes you from nothing to playing full deals, in lessons of a few minutes each, and a steady half hour most days gets people to the table faster than they expect. The pace is yours to set: there’s no clock and no deadline anywhere.
Can I review a lesson without wrecking my progress record?
Yes. Review anything, any time; your record only ever moves forward.
The two systems
What are ACOL and 5‑card majors?
They’re the two most common bidding systems. ACOL is what most clubs in Ireland and the UK play: a weak no‑trump and four-card majors. 5‑card majors, in full Strong No‑Trump and 5‑card majors, is played in most online bridge and much of the rest of the world. It’s the basis of most bidding worldwide (including Standard American). Bridge Unlocked teaches both, properly, as separate complete paths.
Which should I choose?
If you’ll play in an Irish or UK club, choose ACOL. If you’ll mostly play online internationally, choose 5‑card majors. Not sure? There’s a 30‑second comparison when you start, and switching later is safe: progress in each system is kept separately.
Can I learn both?
Yes. Switch in Settings whenever you like. Your progress in each system is kept separately, so nothing is overwritten or lost.
Free and Plus
What’s actually free?
Always free: all of Bridge Basics and the first lesson of every topic, in both systems, plus today’s Daily Deal. A free account gives you Bridge Basics and Hand Evaluation, in both systems, today’s Daily Deal plus the last seven days, starter practice hands and the first practice set at Improver and at Advanced, three full deals a day at the table, and the starter quiz. Free is a real plan, not a teaser. And during our launch period, everything is open to everyone with a free account; when it ends, this is the plan that stays free, and everything you’ve done stays saved.
Do I need a card to start?
Not to start for free: the free plan never asks for a card. You enter card details only when you choose Plus. When a Plus trial is offered, it takes your card upfront, and it is charged when the trial ends unless you cancel first. Cancelling takes a few clicks and you keep access to the end of the trial.
How do I cancel?
In Settings → Account → Account & plan, under Plan and billing, any time, in a few clicks. Your access runs to the end of the period you’ve paid for, and your progress stays saved. Changed your mind within 14 days of starting? Use Cancel contract here, at the foot of every page of this website, for a full refund.
What does Plus cost?
There are two plans. Free costs nothing. Plus is €59 a year or €6.99 a month, VAT included, and you can cancel any time. The current prices are always on the pricing page.
Can I give Bridge Unlocked as a present?
Want to give Bridge Unlocked as a present? Contact us and we’ll set it up between us.
Billing and your data
What happens to my progress if I stop paying?
Nothing bad. Your progress is never deleted for commercial reasons. You keep your record and the free plan’s access; come back to Plus whenever you like and everything is where you left it.
Can I get a refund?
Changed your mind? Ask within 14 days of your first payment for a full refund, no questions asked. After that, please get in touch.
Where is my data kept, and can I take it with me?
Your account and progress are stored on servers we rent from DigitalOcean in Europe, never sold, never shared for advertising. You can download a copy of your data as a file from Settings → Account → Account & plan, under Your data, and you can delete your account there too; deletion is real and permanent.
Do you track me or show ads?
No ads, no ad trackers, no social media pixels. We measure our own site with our own first-party analytics, without advertising cookies. Our emails are different: in the ones with an Unsubscribe link at the bottom, such as the newsletter, we count which links are clicked. The details are in the privacy notice.
Will you warn me before a renewal?
For yearly plans, yes, always. We email you 14 days before any yearly renewal with the exact amount, the date it falls, and a cancel link. If you do nothing, your plan simply continues at the price you signed up at. Monthly plans renew month by month, with a receipt for every payment in your account. And whenever a free trial is offered, we email you two days ahead of it turning into a paid plan, with the exact amount, the date, and a link that takes you straight to cancelling.
Will my price ever go up?
While you stay subscribed, your price never goes up. If prices rise in future, the new prices apply to new subscribers; yours stays where it started for as long as your subscription runs.
Accessibility and comfort
I’m slower on screens than I’d like. Is this for me?
We built for you deliberately: large readable text, big touch targets, no time pressure anywhere, and everything works with a keyboard or a screen reader. We work to WCAG 2.1 AA, and our accessibility statement says exactly where we stand. If anything trips you up, tell us and we’ll fix it.
The future
Can I play against other people?
Not yet. Bridge Unlocked today is single-player: you, the courses, and a table where every deal is checked. Playing against other people, with clubs and friendly competition, is on the roadmap. Switch on Bridge Tips by email in Settings → Account → Email preferences to hear when it arrives.
Is this gambling?
No. There is no money at the table anywhere in Bridge Unlocked, and never will be. Bridge is a game of skill and partnership; we teach the game.
