Transfers over 1NT

Over partner’s 1NT, a transfer shows a five-card major by bidding the suit below it (2♦ for hearts, 2♥ for spades); partner completes the transfer.

When it is used

This keeps the 1NT opener as declarer, so the lead comes up to the strong hand, and gives you an extra bid to describe your hand. Partner must complete: 2♥ over 2♦, 2♠ over 2♥.

After partner completes, every further bid is natural. Pass when you are weak and just wanted to play in the major; bid on to show how much extra you have, and partner picks the final contract with the fit known. Transfers also apply over a 2NT opening.

An example

Partner has opened 1NT. You hold this hand, weak with five spades.

  • ♠ K J 8 6 3
  • ♥ 7 4
  • ♦ Q 8 2
  • ♣ 9 5 3

2♠ Pass

Bid 2♥, the transfer. Partner bids 2♠ and you pass. It is the same spade contract, but now partner, the 1NT opener, is declarer, so the opening lead runs up to the strength, not through it.

Where we teach it

Taught in the Improver course, in the Bidding On topic, in both systems, ACOL and 5‑card majors. In the Beginner course you show a long major over 1NT by bidding it, the weak take-out; transfers replace that at Improver.
