Weak two openings

A weak two (2♦, 2♥ or 2♠) shows a good six-card suit and about 5 to 10 points, mostly in the suit, with no side four-card major.

When it is used

It is pre-emptive: like a pre-empt, its job is to make life awkward for the opponents. Weak hands with a good six-card suit come up far more often than the giants.

Nothing is lost on the strong hands: they now all open 2♣, which becomes your only strong opening. A weak two has an upper limit, so respect it, or partner will misjudge: with 11 points and an outside ace, open one of the suit instead.

An example

You hold this hand.

  • ♠ A K 10 8 7 5
  • ♥ Q 6 4
  • ♦ 6 4
  • ♣ 9 7

Open 2♠: a good six-card suit, with the strength mostly in it and little outside.

Where we teach it

Taught in the Improver course, in the Strong & Pre-emptive Openings topic, the same in both systems, ACOL and 5‑card majors. The Beginner course, in both systems, teaches 2♦, 2♥ and 2♠ as strong openings instead, in The Strong Openings topic.
